Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition 2013
The rain did not deter visitors from touring the tents at the 52nd edition of the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition (TOAE).
I was invited to be on the jury for the Fibre category. The selection was done back in March. It was a big honour for me to be asked to give my opinion alongside textile veterans and members of their board of directors.
When I visit the expo, I usually stick to the textile exhibits but this year I paid more attention to artists doing work in other mediums.
Adam Colangelo works with copper. Each piece of metal is treated to give a different look. No paint is used.
I love the textures he creates on the copper.
They are like mini art pieces in themselves.
I stopped to see standing lamps by visual artist Julia White.
They are textile art.
When lit, the texture takes on a different appearance.
One of my favourite painters at this show is Joseph Sampson. He paints the most amazing oceans! It has been a few years now that I have wanted a painting done by him of the water I see in the south of Italy. I talked to him about the idea this time. Yes, I am like that-get an idea and be pro-active about it.
I did stop a while to admire work by Lizz Aston.
I hope in the future to be able to introduce her art to some of my European colleagues interested in textile.

Summer
We could feel the heat and humidity of summer in Toronto this week.
With the heavy rains though not many were at the cafés.
But it won't be long before we are out enjoying our short season.

Treasures Found and Finished
Coming back home after I have been away for a while gives me the opportunity to see the house from fresh eyes. I usually say something like, "What? I live like this??"
After throwing out stuff that is broken and unrepairable or recycling clothes, books and bikes, comes the studio clean-up.
I have found many quilt tops that were 75% to 90% done. I wonder why I never finished them?
I have started to finish them using fabric I have and only buying back fabric IF needed. Sometimes I can sew a few pieces together and make a very interesting back. The pictures of the quilt tops seen in this post are the ones I finished in the last ten days. Amazing!!
They'll be dropped off at the quilters soon.
Once they are quilted, we'll be able to use them and enjoy them or give them away as special gifts.
Much better than being in a cardboard box!

Expression for All Senses
I saw this piece in Paris.
It's installed in a perfect spot at the end of a hallway at the Centre Pompidou and can be seen from far away.
The viewer participates in a sensorial experience.
It's a sculpture made of fabric and spices- cloves, cumin, pepper, curcuma. The smells arouse the senses. I feel the weight of it by looking at it. From reading about this artist, I see many of his works are interactive but I saw no one venture into this space.
